On this half-day tour we cover three different neighborhoods and a really nice mix of highlight places and lesser-visited spots away from the crowds. I think of it as the perfect introduction to Venice and an ideal way to start any stay here.
Along our walk, we'll visit the sestieri (neighborhoods) of San Polo, Dorsoduro, and San Marco.
The tour starts off at the Rialto Bridge - always crowded, but always beautiful - and then moves into the bustling San Polo area. Here, we'll pass by a collection of lovely squares, over charming bridges, and in front of many churches. The architecture all around is very pretty.
Our walk continues into the quieter neighborhood of Dorsoduro, an area popular with tourists, but where locals actually still live. There are a series of delightful little squares here: Campo San Pantalon, Campo Santa Margherita, and Campo San Barnaba, which we'll detour through. The church on San Pantalon is particularly nice and we can enter if you'd like. There are plenty of good cafes around, so we can grab a coffee if a break is in order.
Eventually, we'll find ourselves in the busy area that surrounds the Gallerie dell'Accademia museum, one of the best in Italy. We won't enter the museum, but the architecture around here is delightful, so we'll do a bit of exploring.
From the Accademia, a hop across its namesake bridge brings us into San Marco, the neighborhood that has been the heart of Venice for centuries. This is where you have the greatest concentration of "highlights", many of which we'll pass by. Our final destination if Piazza San Marco, but along the way we'll be sure to stop outside places like Teatro La Fenice and Scala Contarini del Bovolo.
We finish our wander in Piazza San Marco, Venice's most important square and a place of unimaginable beauty. We don't enter the Basilica or Doge's Palace on this tour, but we'll admire them from the outside, discuss the art and history, and chat about the Venetian Republic that ruled here for centuries.
