Aside from fabulously popular Matera, the Basilicata region is one of Italy's least visited. Part of the deep south, everything from the cuisine, the language, and the traditions are vastly different from what you probably associate with Italy.
Traditionally, and still in present day, this is one of the poorest parts of the country. Although filled with ancient villages, good beaches, and a cluster of excellent national parks, the mass tourism that you find elsewhere is almost entirely absent here. This is part of the pleasure of visiting - you'll often be the only tourist around.
While the lack of development and authenticity is part of the draw, it does also come with some less fun realities. English is little spoken, public transport is non-existent, and tourist services are still in their infancy. But if you've got a little patience and a spirit for adventure, come now before things change!
