If you're staying somewhere in Puglia and want to visit Matera on a day trip, then this is the tour for you.

The way I normally structure the day is an early pick up at your hotel (around 9:00 am), then a drive to Matera with a stop in the town of Altamura along the way. Altamura doesn't often appear in guidebooks or blog posts, but it's an interesting little city with a nice historic center and a long tradition of bread making. So, we normally stop here for 30 minutes to an hour to go for a walk in the center and try some of the delicious bread.

From Altamura, we continue on to Matera. Once here, we'll do a lovely tour of the historic center, covering all of what I consider the highlights. We'll wander the pretty streets and dip down back alleys while discussing the city's fascinating and totally unique history. We can also pop our heads into a cave house or two and visit a few churches.

After the tour, we'll break for lunch and a bit of free time before heading back to the car for the return journey to your hotel.

Please note: Pick up can be done anywhere in the general Bari and Valle d'Itria areas, both of which are about 1 hour from Matera. If you are staying in Lecce or anywhere south of that general area, it's too far for a day trip.
