Italy's second largest island, the vast majority of visitors come to Sardinia for the beaches, and while they are fantastic, the island's allure is not limited to just sea and sand. Mysterious Bronze Age ruins dot the hinterland, ancient traditions continue unchanged in the mountains, and remains of important Roman towns lie on windswept coasts, lapped by the sea.
For most of its history, Sardinia existed entirely separate from mainland Italy and while today it feels quite Italian, its people, culture, cuisine, and language are distinct. If you ask a Sardinian where they're from, they're likely to tell your Sardinian first and Italy only as an afterthought.
Away from the beaches, there is ample opportunity for fabulous hiking and outdoor activities in the mountains of the Barbagia, as well as terrific gastronomic experiences at agriturismi, vineyards, farms, and local artisan producers all over the island.
Come for the beaches, stay for everything else!
