What better way is there to learn about a city, or a people even, than through their cuisine? This is especially true for Sardinia, a region with a varied history that includes hundreds of years of conquest by different civilizations, each of which contributed to the completely distinct cuisine and unique culinary tradition that you'll find here. So let's discover all this together, while also exploring Cagliari's city center and learning about the history of our capital city!
Beginning in the city center, we will pass through some of the most historic districts on our way to the San Benedetto market, the city's food temple and the arrival point for many of the best producers in the region. The market is divided into two floors: on the first, there is fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, sweets, and stands for cheeses, cured meats, and local products. The lower floor is exclusively dedicated to fish.
We'll begin with tastings of seasonal fruits and vegetables, then continue with a journey to taste the island's most typical cheeses and cured meats, while discovering the wines that pair best with them. Our visit ends with a tasting of the (very) strong flavor of bottarga - fish roe -, one of the oldest foods of the Mediterranean.
Once out of the market, we'll dive back into the ancient heart of the city, discovering unexpected places where we'll stop to try traditional foods and lesser-known dishes. There will be time to sample wines from passionate small producers and to learn about the fascinating and ancient enology of Sardinia.
And to finish, a dessert in one of the best ice cream parlors in the city, which creates refined flavors using extremely fresh, local products.
