If you're looking for an immersive but relatively leisurely Mount Etna experience, look no further! On this full-day tour, we'll enjoy the best of both worlds, combining a bit of hiking with some excellent wine and local cuisine.
There's a reason why Mount Etna routinely tops the list of the most visited places in Sicily: because it's an unbelievable place! And the best way to experience this still-active volcano is to get up close and personal with a walk along its legendary slopes.
And that's exactly what we're going to do on this full-day excursion. To begin, I'll pick you up in my 9-seater van from wherever you're staying, and we'll then set off on a quick drive to the volcano's north slope, passing through forests and lava fields and marveling at the sweeping coastal views. We'll soon arrive to our first stop, the Monti Sartorius, a collection of craters set amidst some truly breathtaking landscapes.
We'll go for a pleasant walk (about 2 miles) along the rims of the craters, during which l'll tell you about the history of the volcano and the surrounding area and will give you a solid geological overview. Craters aren't the only thing we'll see here though, as there are also solidified lava flows from the eruption of 1865, and beautiful forests filled with endemic vegetation. It's a wonderful area!
Once we've finished our hike, it's time to move on to one of the most authentic villages in the area, located right in the volcano's foothills. Here, we'll head to a private residence where we'll meet one of Etna's top sommeliers, who will guide us in a tasting of Etna Rosso and Bianco wines. We'll surely be hungry by this point, so the wines will be paired with a typical lunch prepared by a fabulous local chef.
The setting for the lunch and wine tasting is truly charming, and it's very intimate, with no more than two tables available. And all around us will be vineyards growing Etna Bianco Superiore grapes.
Finally, once we've finished eating and drinking, we'll hop back in the car and I'll take you back to your accommodation.
