Let's cross the Arno River and delve into the Oltrarno, where we'll find a less touristy side of Florence. Here, artisans still create magical works of art by hand, antique shops hold genuine hidden gems from the past, and the streets feel more intimate and give you the chance to feel just a little bit what Florence was like many centuries ago.
And, of course, this is also the part of the city where the Medici dynasty spent the last 200 years of their life and reign, so there's no shortage of riches of theirs to discover as well. With that in mind, we'll pay a visit to the last official residency of the Medici, the magnificent Palazzo Pitti.
Commissioned by the Florentine banker Luca Pitti in 1458, the incredible structure that we see standing today is the result of over 400 years of construction! Over its long life the palace has housed 3 different dynasties and today contains no less than 5 museums: a painting gallery, a costume museum, a ceramic museum, a carriage museum, and a silver museum. And then there's the wonderful Boboli Garden of the palazzo, which is itself an open-air museum.
So, over the course of about 4.5 hours together, we'll explore the Oltrarno, we'll pop into the shops of various local artisans to learn about their craft, and will tour the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens, spending as much or as little time as you'd like at each of our various stops.
And should you get hungry at any point during the tour (there's always time for food!), we can take a break and enjoy a very special treat in a wonderful and unique location. I won't spoil the surprise though!
*Please note: artisan shops are closed on Sundays and the Pitti Palace is closed on Mondays.
