About
Join me on a discovery of these two legendary cities that were buried by the same volcanic eruption in 79 AD.
We'll begin our tour with Pompeii, the more famous of the two sites, and will first visit the most important public buildings of the city. Some of the places we'll see and learn about include the theaters, thermal baths, Forum and its surroundings, and the Lupanare (the famous brothel).
After Pompeii, we'll head on to Herculaneum (taking a taxi or the train), where we'll investigate the most interesting private buildings.
In Herculaneum, we will investigate the private buildings, paying special attention to the villas, home to ancient wealthy Romans, and each decorated with spectacular mosaics, frescos, and stucco decorations. We'll also view and learn about various shops that characterized the daily life in the ancient city.
I'll also explain how the volcanic eruption and ensuing burial of the two cities affected them differently, preserving the plaster casts in Pompeii, and the carbonized wood in Herculaneum.
