Perugia, Umbria's capital, is a lovely mix of architectural styles with a fascinating history and a busy, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Despite being home to only 100,000 inhabitants, the city's famous university draws thousands of international students, professors, and visitors, and the city feels totally different from many of Umbria's quieter and more regional cities.
Perugia has been an important place since the ancient Etruscans, and you can feel the layers of history here, each piled on top of the other. We'll get a taste for all of this - moving from the Etruscans to the Romans, then on to the medieval period, and further to the Renaissance.
To explore the city well, we need at least 3 hours. During this time, we'll pass by the main sights, squares, and monuments, but also visit the primary shopping district and the more modern side of town. Obligatory on any visit to Perugia, we'll stop to visit some local artisans' shops and studios and try a fabulous local cake at my favorite cafe.
