For foodies or just hungry travelers, why not see a bit of the city while trying lots of great local treats?!
After many decades of "testing" my city's restaurants, markets, cafes, and food stalls, I've come up with a lovely route that hits some great spots and showcases Turin and Piedmont's gastronomic specialties. I can't tell you exactly what we'll eat because it varies according to the time of year that you're here and what's being served at different restaurants on any given day. But to give you an idea, here are some things we might be able to try:
- Grissini breadsticks - invented in Turin, they're perfect with a glass of wine from Piedmont
- Local Piedmont cheese and cured meats
- Tajarin - fresh egg pasta, we like to count the yolks per kg of flour, the more the merrier!
- Agnolotti - fresh pasta traditionally filled with meat and vegetables, served with the jus of roasted meat.
- Tartare - meat dish made from raw Piedmont beef, we call it "battuta", beaten, because it's minced by beating with the back of the knife.
- Bicerin - our traditional hot beverage with coffee, milk and chocolate of different textures, it's a journey in flavor.
- Artisanal chocolates (because why not!)
Generally we start the tour with a walk through Porta Palazzo market, the biggest open air market in the city which is a huge square full of stands selling all different types food. From there, we walk through the Quadrilatero distric, the ancient Roman quarter of the city. Where we go from there - and what we eat - remains to be seen!
As I noted before, the exact route and stops depends on the season, but also on your preferences. If you let me know a bit about what food you like (or what you're interested in trying), I'm happy to see what we can accommodate.
